The Myth of Success
Good ole success. That's a word that is like music to many of our ears. For as long as I can remember, success or being successful was likened to having a desirable career, being married (whether happy or not), a couple of kids, a house (even if you went into debt to get it), and so forth. In fact, the busier we are, the more success we will gain or so we think. But is that really success? Of course, on the surface those things may look good, but don't guarantee that you'll feel good. My goal after you read this post is to help change the narrative of what you think success is.In our society, we have developed a martyr mentality. The notion of "I can do it all", "I don't need any help", and "the busier I am the better." Don't get me wrong, there are times when we need to go the extra mile, but too often we don't know when too much is too much. You know that you are doing too much when your stress levels become too high and you become extremely agitated, tired, and over committed. Resentment can even set in because there's a part of us that isn't being fulfilled. Because of our busyness, we don't have the time to invest in ourselves and the things we love to do.I have to admit I've been guilty of this myself. I had this grinder's mentality, the martyrdom syndrome, and to top it all off perfectionism. The big three. The perfect storm. A nervous breakdown in the making. It wasn't until I burned through all of my internal resources that I figured out all I had been doing was unecessary. You see, I thought that God was just like people and the more you do, the more He would expect. I thought He would love me more because I was striving to please...I was a human-doing, instead of a human-being. I was determined to be all things to all people. Big mistake.Everything I was working so hard to build was being built from a place of striving. Friends, everything we do, say, and build needs to be done from a place of rest. I'm not saying we should sit by the wayside and be lazy, and I do believe very much in building. However, we have to rest up in our alone time with ourselves and if you are reading this and believe in God--you have to rest in His presence. He's the only true giver of life and restoration. Let's work towards living a life less success-driven and more purpose-driven. When your purpose is discovered you will find true success.❤️
